CCBD Education and School Program

School is a routine part of most kids' lives. We understand that having a child who is diagnosed with cancer or a blood disorder can disrupt that routine and cause increased need for school supports and services.

The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Children's National has an education team that is available to help you and your child navigate the school system during and following treatment. Our education specialists work closely with families, school systems and medical teams to ensure that a comprehensive school plan is created to meet each child’s unique needs.

Education Services

Common resources and supports provided by our education specialists may include:

  • An education guide to help you navigate the school system and advocate for appropriate school supports
  • Assistance with school forms and paperwork, including home and hospital paperwork
  • Support with school planning
  • Communication with school teams to help them understand diagnosis information and recommendations for how to support your child’s academic needs
  • Participation in Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or 504 Plan meetings
  • School re-entry planning
  • College scholarship resources

Please note that some resources listed above might be provided by other members of our medical or psychosocial team.

School During Hospitalizations

For patients with extended hospitalizations, our education specialists work with the school districts to determine how academic services will be provided. Our education program also includes a volunteer tutoring and internship program that supports hospitalized students. Students can receive help on school projects and assignments or complete educational enrichment activities provided by our education specialists.
