Epilepsy/Neuropsychology Externship

The Combined Clinical Externship in Epilepsy and Neuropsychology is ideally suited for advanced practicum students seeking further training in pediatric psychology. The extern will spend one day each with the Comprehensive Pediatric Epilepsy Program (CPEP) and the Division of Neuropsychology at Children’s National Hospital, under the direct clinical supervision of Eleni Rizakos, Psy.D., and Leigh Sepeta, Ph.D.

The Comprehensive Pediatric Epilepsy Program provides services to a diverse population of children and adolescents who are diagnosed with epilepsy. The epilepsy rotation involves working as part of a multidisciplinary team that provides services to a diverse population of youth diagnosed with epilepsy. Disciplines include neurology, surgery, neuropsychology, family support and psychology.

The Division of Neuropsychology inpatient neuropsychology experience is divided into two parts. On the Neuroscience floor, externs see patients with a variety of neurological diseases/disorders, including severe traumatic brain injury (TBI), hypoxia/hypoxic brain injury, encephalitis and stroke. On the Trauma Team/Neurosurgery floors, externs primarily see patients with mild to moderate traumatic brain injuries.
