Education

The Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship offers intensive exposure to patient care, a variety of rotations and clinical conference time. Learn more about the clinical and academic sides of our program, as well as the compensation and benefits in our Fellows’ Manual (PDF).

Clinical

During the PEM Fellowship, 13 months are devoted to patient care. Fellows work side by side with pediatric emergency medicine sub-specialists managing acute patients, supervising residents from six different pediatric and emergency medicine training programs and learning management skills to oversee a busy emergency department.

Additional rotations for Pediatric-trained PEM fellows:

  • 1.5 months Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
  • 1 month Adult Emergency Medicine
  • 1 month Adult Trauma
  • 1 month Toxicology
  • 1 month Wound Management
  • 1 month Anesthesiology
  • 1 month Emergency Medical Services
  • 1 month Ultrasound
  • 1 month Child Protection
  • 1 month Sports/Ortho

The program welcomes applicants who are Emergency Medicine-trained. The fellowship is two years and requires a research project. 

Additional rotations for Emergency Medicine-trained PEM fellows:

  • 1 month Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
  • 1 month Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
  • 1 month Pediatric Hospital Medicine
  • 1 month Pediatric Cardiology
  • ½ month Pediatric Neurology
  • ½ month Outpatient Pediatrics
  • 1 month Wound Management
  • 1 month Anesthesiology

Remaining months are devoted to the completion of an individual research project.

Academic

The academic program includes four hours of protected clinical conference time every week. The PEM Fellows’ Conference is presented by the fellows, PEM faculty and speakers who are invited from other divisions to discuss a broad range of medical topics. Journal club, journal watch, simulation work, code review and professional development talks are incorporated into the clinical conferences. All fellows have an opportunity to attend major national scientific meetings.

Compensation and Benefits

A yearly stipend is provided for purchase of books and journals. Fellows also have the opportunity to complete coursework at The George Washington University with reduced tuition.
